Brilliant Eric, and nicely poetic. I could see someone arguing that AI will eventually untangle this complexity, but I think you have hit on the relevant point: the essential infinitude of interactions fundamentally supersedes linear modes of thought (or, as they would have it, computation). So instead of solving these problems (which we can't) we are tempted to construct narratives based on our own values, wishes, and intuitions and convince ourselves that we are marching toward progress. I particularly like your honing in on some of the statistical devices we use and their inherent limitations. I look forward to reading your new piece on this!

“Interplay” amongst thousands of genetic variants, as a theory, cannot be disproven, because there are probably more possible combinations than there are people in the world (and even twins are demonstrably different). In that sense, it is an escape hatch for the failure of genetic studies of behavior. Moreover, how does this idea hold onto strong generational heritability? The truth is, that this is more of a rationalization than an explanation, and undermines the initial premise that inspired the field (high heritability). It is not that different from astrological predictions, which often give similar, tepid, positive results when studied.
